Secondary Air Injection: Do You Have It?

Land Rover V8 Rover V8’s are available in two versions after 1999. They were either equipped with Secondary Air Injection, or they weren’t. Here are some pictures to help you tell the difference.

Range Rover engine with Secondary Air Injection

This first picture is a Range Rover that is equipped with Secondary Air Injection. There are two main things to look for here. On the right side of the engine compartment, (passengers side) there is an Air Pump just about midway down the side mounted to the fenderwell.(see Yellow Square )

The second thing that is unique to the Secondary Air Injection engines is the Diverter Valves and Air Pipes located on each cylinder head. These are easy enough to see and are attached to the cylinder heads just above the two center exhaust ports. Looking at the picture, they are the two shiny objects on both sides of the engine.

Discovery II engine with Secondary Air Injection

This picture is of a Discovery II that is also equipped with Secondary Air Injection. Just like the Range Rover, the shiny tops of the Diverter Valves are easily recognizable on each side of the engine. The difference in the Discovery II is the location of the Air Pump. It is tucked all the way back into the right rear corner of the engine compartment, and is mounted sideways as compared to the Range Rover. (see Yellow Square )

Discovery II engine without Secondary Air Injection

The last picture is a Discovery II that is not equipped with Secondary Air Injection so that you can see the difference. (see Yellow Square )

How to identify the Engine Code Location

Ok, so what happens if you happen upon an engine that is already out of the car and you still need to identify it? You look for the engine code!

If you will look at the left side of the engine, down between the two center cylinders, there is a machined pad. (see Yellow Square)

On this pad is the Engine Serial Number, and compression ratio. The first three digits of the Engine Serial Number is the Engine Code. These numbers tell you the engine size and the application. These are the codes for the late Bosch engines.
